LAS VEGAS -- Chuck Giampa, Jerry Roth and Dalby Shirley were
called judges last night. They should have been called bandits.
Together they conspired to rob Pernell Whitaker of the World
Boxing Council welterweight championship, awarding a decision to
young Oscar De La Hoya that he neither earned nor deserved.
That is not De La Hoya's fault but it is Nevada's shame this
morning. Once again the judges went with the future bet, putting
their vote behind the 24-year-old De La Hoya, who had said before the
fight that he knew he often was given close rounds he didn't
necessarily deserve because of his reputation.
Giampa had it 115-111 while Roth and Shirley scored it 116-110.
