In a locked cabinet beside his rumpled daybed, 90-year-old Hussein Magda keeps his most precious possession. It is a sales contract, cracked and yellow with age, and it identifies him as the owner of a three-room house with garden near the coastal city of Acre, now called Akko and in Israel.

He bought it for 35 Palestinian guineas in 1932, the document shows.

"God willing, there will be a Muslim who will liberate the land," said Magda, who has buried two wives and married a third since fleeing here with the first great tide of Palestinian refugees during the creation of Israel in 1948. "There is no other solution for the Jews other than to slaughter them and throw them into the sea."
