The Other Mandela
IN HIS otherwise favorable review of my book, Tomorrow is Another
Country: The Inside Story of South Africa's Road to Change (Book
World, April 16), Jacob Weisberg makes a gross misstatement of fact
which I cannot let pass without comment.
He states that I "neglect to mention Winnie Mandela's trial for
murder," and cites this as evidence of a bias in favor of the African
National Congress.
The facts are that Mrs. Mandela was never tried for murder, nor
was such a charge ever made against her. What she was tried for and
convicted of was kidnapping, and I did indeed refer to this on page
32 of the book.
There the following words appear quite clearly: "She {Mrs.
Mandela} ...
