For two arduous years, the Washington Capitals were asked, What in
the world is going on with Brendan Witt? And they always answered
with another question: Who knows?
One of the longest and strangest contract squabbles in NHL history
ended happily for the Capitals very late Friday night, when they
signed Witt literally moments before the clock struck midnight, at
which time they would have lost the rights to the bruising 20-year-
old defenseman.
Witt, whom the Capitals drafted 11th overall in 1993, signed a
five-year contract worth $6.7 million, with $2.7 million as a signing
bonus. Money always had been the crux of the impasse.
