SALEM -- Arismeni Gonzalez knew. The second he saw the two
18-year-old guys singing on the little stage in the restaurant in
Peabody three years ago, he just knew. The musky green smell of star
potential curled all over the room, intoxicating. Money, baby. With
those voices, and those looks? Ay, Dios. Endless possibilities.
There was one slight problem, though. Giovanni Gonzalez and
Lisandro Fernandez, born and raised in Salem, New Englanders to the
bone, were singing in English. Think: The Latino population in the
US had grown by more than 30 percent during the 1990s. Latino buying
power had increased by 65 percent. And the money to be made in Latin
America? Wow. English? Ay, no. But ...
