American Rivers, which says it is the nation's top river
conservation group, last month gave out 17 Urban Hometown Rivers
awards at a two-day symposium in Washington, D.C. Two of the awards
went to groups in Massachusetts. The Somerville Arts Council won for
a mural of marsh life near a public housing development. The Great
Barrington Land Conservancy was honored for building a river walk
along the Housatonic River.
In the press release was a message from the main corporate
sponsor of the awards and the symposium. The sponsor said that for
more than 40 years it "has been addressing the special environmental
needs of our nation's cities, and we understand that protecting
American waters ...
