MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The pulsating beat of this hip, Art Deco
mecca rocks unchecked inside the crowded clubs along Ocean Drive and
the sultry cafes behind them.
It's off-season in South Beach, but the hedonistic intensity of
this once-dilapidated barrier beach is as palpable as the oppressive
humidity on a 95-degree summer night.
Not even the murder of an international fashion designer can change
that. Beautiful women still skate past the mansion where Gianni
Versace was shot last Tuesday in broad daylight. Bodybuilders still
strut along the beach, and bartenders still pour an unending stream
of drinks.
