WOMEN WILL make their mark on the mail this year, when they are
featured on stamps for two-ounce and three-ounce letters.
Alice Hamilton, a pioneer in industrial medicine and an ardent
pacifist who was once labeled a Communist sympathizer, appears on the
55-cent (two-ounce) stamp, and suffragist Alice Paul will be on the
78-cent (three-ounce) stamp.
They will replace two male politicians, Democrat Hubert H.
Humphrey, former U.S. vice president and senator, who is on the old
52-cent (two-ounce) stamp, and Republican Wendell Willkie, a
presidential nominee who appeared on the 75-cent (three-ounce) stamp
under the rates that ended Jan. 1.
