NEW YORK -- Influent, a reformed claimer who has enjoyed an
outstanding year, slowed the pace and had plenty left at the end as
he captured the $400,000 Man O'War at Belmont Park yesterday.
Influent was given a masterful ride by Jerry Bailey, who had a banner
day, winning five races.
Trained by Howard Tesher, Influent, a noted front-runner, has won
five of seven starts this year, with one second, which came in the
New Hampshire Sweepstakes at Rockingham Park June 15 (beaten by Ok By
Me). The son of Ascot Knight, who was racing for a claiming tag as
recently as last October, has earned more than $750,000 in 1997.
Bailey, riding Influent for the first time, took the horse right
to the lead ...
