"Livin' on a Prayer," a decade-old song I never liked from an
album ("Slippery When Wet") I don't own, has lodged in my brain like
an unwelcome house guest. For this intrusion I blame the band Bon
Jovi, which dominated the charts in the late 1980s by cranking out
"lite"-metal anthems that were not optional -- that is, songs that
attached themselves to a subliminal pop-hook receptor.
Now, Jon Bon Jovi (who will hereafter be referred to as Bon Jovi,
not to be confused with his band) would very much like to show the
world the serious, contemplative artist within. His second solo CD,
