PROVIDENCE -- Ever since Roger Williams got fed up with
Massachusetts and founded Rhode Island, the Ocean State has depended
on refugees from the north.
Nowhere is that more true than in the business world. Over the
past few years, Rhode Island has attracted Boston-based Fidelity
Investments with a tax break, has won over Massachusetts air
travelers with its low-priced airport, and is trying to entice Boston
insurance companies with the promise of a better regulatory climate.
With its bid to lure the New England Patriots, the Ocean State
is hoping to add to the list.
The import strategy makes sense when you consider one thing:
