In his former travels throughout New England, Mike Hannigan
would often find his curiosity piqued when he drove over a bridge and
glanced down at the river below. He would see it wind, then
disappear around a bend. Where did it lead to, he would wonder.
Today he and his wife, Betty, do not just wonder. They find out.
Hannigan likes putting out in his canoe in the early morning,
when a low mist fractures sunbeams. The water appears surreal as he
paddles, on this day, south from Bridgewater down the Taunton River.
The only sounds are his paddle cutting into the river and the
occasional bird singing to another. He pretends he is an explorer,
awaiting an adventure at every turn.
