At least three people have died in possible heat-related incidents
in the Washington area, which continued to swelter yesterday in near-
record temperatures and humidity.
The mercury hit 99 degrees, closing the Washington Monument for a
third day, wreaking havoc with water pressure and traffic signals and
causing power outages to about 5,000 Virginia residents, officials
said.
The deadly combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures -
- which set a record of 102 at Baltimore-Washington International
Airport and came within one degree of Washington's record -- prompted
the National Weather Service to issue its first-ever "excessive heat
