Sidney Simon, a sculptor who cofounded the Skowhegan (Maine)
School of Painting and Sculpture, died of congestive heart failure
Monday in his home in Truro. He was 80.
Mr. Simon's work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in
Europe, New York City and Provincetown and is in the permanent
collections of the Whitney and Corcoran Museums. He created
sculptures that adorn fountains at the World Wide Plaza in New York
City and the Graham Building in Philadelphia, and interior pieces for
the chapel at the US Military Academy at West Point.
The Skowhegan School, located on 160 acres of donated land, 30
miles west of Bangor, was founded in 1947 by Mr. Simon, Bill Cummings
and Henry Varnum ...
