The transfer of goalkeeper Brad Friedel from Major League Soccer
to Liverpool in England helps bring the MLS into the world market.
Friedel's value has been determined, the bureaucracy has been
overcome, a deal has been consummated, and now the Columbus Crew must
go about finding a replacement.
Such activity occurs nearly every day with clubs around the world.
The MLS, with its central planning and low budgets, has not been as
active as some leagues in transferring players.
For many clubs, such transfers are their lifeblood. But the MLS
does not depend on transfers to capitalize operations. However, the
transfer market is a fertile source for publicity, and this is where
