Harvard Management Co. thinks it has a pretty good investment idea. But like any other good investor, it would just as soon not share it with the rest of us.

In a world where the big institutions usually don't play, Harvard Management has quietly built a position as one of the largest -- if not the largest -- holders of closed-end funds.

According to an analysis done for us by CDA/Spectrum, a Rockville, Md., research firm, Harvard Management, the investment arm of Harvard University, owned more than a half-billion dollars in closed-end funds at the end of June -- and that does not include its substantial stake in funds registered in London and elsewhere outside the United States.
