The GI Bill stands as a refutation of those who argue that the
federal government can't do anything right. The unintended
consequences of the interstate highway system stand as proof that
maybe they have a point.
Whatever your take on this extraordinary pair of postwar
initiatives, there is no gainsaying the truth behind the titles of
two fine documentaries airing tonight on WGBH-Ch. 2: "The GI Bill:
The Law That Changed America" (9 p.m.) and "Divided Highways: The
Interstates and the Transformation of American Life" (10 p.m.).
