Unlike Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Nomar Garciaparra did not run
unopposed. To say so would be a disservice to Toronto outfielder
Jose Cruz Jr. and Angels pitcher Jason Dickson, fine players both.
But Garciaparra's election held just about as much suspense as the
mayor's will.
Better to call it a coronation. The Red Sox shortstop yesterday
was a unanimous selection as American League Rookie of the Year, the
13th player to receive all first-place votes and the first Boston
player to be named top rookie since Fred Lynn in 1975.
Who could ask for a better year? Well, Garciaparra, for one.
Asked what he could improve in his game next season, Garciaparra
