Maybe it's all that surrounding desert. Or the 70-some-odd golf
courses for barely more than 40,000 people. Or the clean air. But
Palm Springs seems worlds away from the sprawl of Los Angeles, less
than a two-hour drive to the west.
Like any oasis, it is loaded with unexpected pleasures. And,
simply, the unexpected. The wealthy come to this resort to vacation,
retire or hide. Al Campanis, 78 and recovering from a stroke, has
come here to resume his life's work.
After a painful seven-year absence -- forced by an episode that
may mark him more than all of his other personal and professional
acts combined -- Campanis is back in baseball.
