Article: Duffy quits as consumer chief after fund-raising questioned

Michael T. Duffy, the state's consumer chief and a Republican candidate for state treasurer, handed his resignation last night to Acting Governor Paul Cellucci, saying it is too difficult legally to hold his state job and run a campaign.

Duffy had intended to resign the $75,000-a-year post sometime early next year, an agreement he says he made with Cellucci when the acting governor recruited him to run for treasurer earlier this fall. But nagging questions over fund-raising activities led Cellucci this week to publicly call for Duffy's resignation.
