THE TALLIS SCHOLARS
At: Church of the Advent, last night
Jacobus Clemens, Adriaan Willaert, and Jacob Obrecht are
Renaissance composers who, only two decades ago, would have qualified
as musical esoterica -- masters known to professionals and, briefly,
to music students whose interest in music before the 18th century
often ended after exams. Mature interest in earlier music has grown
considerably since then, and if these composers are now more widely
considered, it's in no small part due to the sublime work of the
English choral ensemble with the misleadingly academic moniker, The
