Plans for a National African American Museum are being shelved by
officials of the Smithsonian Institution because of the budget-
cutting climate on Capitol Hill. And the fallback strategy -- a new
Center for African American History and Culture to organize
exhibitions and sponsor research at existing facilities -- has museum
supporters angry.
Steven Newsome, director of the Smithsonian's Anacostia Museum,
will head the new center, which will begin operations next month.
"The Center for African American History and Culture . . . is an
articulation of a permanent commitment" by the Smithsonian, says
Newsome. "We are going to be about developing research opportunities,
doing original research ...
