Article: CRITICISM OF JOE KENNEDY WAS UNFAIR

In response to Jeff Jacoby's March 17 column "Why did Joe Kennedy ever run in the first place?": I first met Joe Kennedy when I joined the staff of Robert F. Kennedy in 1967. I knew Joe Kennedy briefly then, but I have vivid memories of that time.

At the Kennedy Christmas party at Hickory Hill that year (what was to be the last Christmas he spent with his father), I watched Joe, a kid who had just returned home from prep school, cross the drawing room to greet his father. I was only 21 years old and was acutely aware of Joe's self-consciousness.
