SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS, Dominican Republic -- The future of Red
Sox baseball lies just beyond the wrought-iron gate swung open by a
guard with a sawed-off shotgun slung over his shoulder.
Here, cutting a swath through the sugar-cane fields just
outside this mill town about 45 miles east of the capital city of
Santo Domingo, is a sparkling complex engaged in the production of
the Dominican Republic's most famous exports, baseball players.
It is the baseball academy run by the Hiroshima Toyo Carp,
drawn to this island nation for the same reason that all 30 major
