A controversial Department of Defense training program for
psychologists has been targeted for elimination by a House of
Representatives committee, just months after its first graduates have
begun writing prescriptions for patients.
Started nearly five years ago, the demonstration program was
designed to test the merit of giving a few psychologists additional
training and then allowing them to prescribe drugs to treat a wide
range of mental problems, from anxiety and depression to
schizophrenia. Generally only medical doctors, including
psychiatrists, are allowed to prescribe medications.
