WASHINGTON - For those who like their ironies exquisite, the
word from Massachusetts over the last several weeks was that Joe
Kennedy's political standing was as strong as ever.
The private polling around the fringes of the fatuous race for
governor that he abandoned last summer made the point dramatically.
From the "controversial" figure in last year's tabloidization of
state politics, Joe Kennedy these days was coming in at 63-29
percent favorable. He won every Democratic primary pairing you
could imagine for the gubernatorial nomination. And he was the only
Democrat with a legitimate chance to win the general election
against the Republican front-runner, Acting Governor Paul Cellucci. ...
