Vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to brittle bones and other ailments, may be far more widespread than previously suspected, judging from a Boston study published today and other accumulating evidence.

The implication, specialists say, is that virtually everyone should take vitamin D capsules, especially during northern winters when the lack of sun exposure sharply limits the body's ability to make its own stores of the vitamin.
