Vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to brittle bones and other
ailments, may be far more widespread than previously suspected,
judging from a Boston study published today and other accumulating
evidence.
The implication, specialists say, is that virtually everyone
should take vitamin D capsules, especially during northern winters
when the lack of sun exposure sharply limits the body's ability to
make its own stores of the vitamin.
Nearly 60 percent of several hundred patients hospitalized for
diverse reasons had insufficient vitamin D in their blood in a
study led by Dr. Melissa K. Thomas of Massachusetts General
