The unemployment rate in Virginia dropped to 4.5 percent in July
from 4.8 percent in June, as students seeking vacation work benefited
from the best summer job market of the decade, the Virginia
Employment Commission reported yesterday.
In Northern Virginia, the jobless rate fell to 3.1 percent from
3.5 percent in June. State figures lag the national report by a
month. The national jobless rate for July was 5.9 percent, and
analysts anticipate that the August figures, due out today, will be
slightly less than that.
Unlike national employment numbers, the state figures are not
adjusted to take account of seasonal fluctuations, such as the flood
