In the baby's world, before anything else, like light before
mankind, there is Lambie. Their life together is a union of perfect
communication: the baby does all the chattering, and Lambie,
enigmatic, ever-present, portable, once-white Lambie, does all the
listening. Lambie does not mind taking orders or being held by the
teeth. At night, the baby gazes sleepily out from my arms while
Lambie gazes out from hers. Lambie is her perfect love. I am
grateful she has one.
But sometimes, when only the arms of Lambie will do, I am not
so grateful. Who is this Lambie from Thailand by way of Lord &
Taylor? This Lambie who is anatomically empty, yet stuffed with
