BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. -- Living on Block Island and visiting it
"are a world apart," one islander explains.
Block Island is a place where people can loosen their ties, kick
off their shoes and throw on a pair of sandals to enjoy the 10 square
miles of nothing but peace and tranquility.
Thousands of tourists flock to the island every year during the
summer season for a quick getaway. Many take the 55-minute ride from
Point Judith to the island via one of the Block Island ferries: the
Carol Jean, Anna C or the Block Island. The Carol Jean's first mate
and deck hand, Chris Tretheway says, the eight-person crew "minds
and operates the deck to assure the safety of passengers."
