DUBLIN -- The political wing of the IRA said yesterday that it
would recommend that supporters back referendums in Northern Ireland
and the Irish Republic to approve the political settlement reached
last month in Belfast.
According to sources in the republican movement, meanwhile, the
IRA has given its political representatives in Sinn Fein approval to
take seats in a Northern Ireland assembly. This was the strongest
indication yet that the most enduring guerrilla organization of the
20th century may be prepared to let politics take precedence over
violence.
In tandem, the decisions by the Irish Republican Army and Sinn
Fein give a giant boost to the prospects of the May 22 referendums.
