KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This 14-3 Red Sox romp was initially a game
of emotion, Bret Saberhagen returning to Kansas City to pitch for the
first time in seven years. Then it was a game of tempers, Red Sox
catcher Jason Varitek and Royals second baseman Jose Offerman pushing
each other and causing both benches to empty.
Finally, it became a game of concern. The Red Sox' hearts went
to their throats in the bottom of the seventh when shortstop Nomar
Garciaparra dived for a single up the middle by Shane Halter -- with
Boston leading by nine runs at the time -- and came up holding his
right shoulder.
Garciaparra was forced to leave the game with an initial
diagnosis of a slight shoulder strain. After ...
