Now that the kiddies are back to school, they are less likely to
have unexpected and unwanted encounters with snakes. But up in
Ellicott City, the Keyes family will remember a certain black
slitherer for a long time.
It was early on a Wednesday in June. Six-year-old Sarah Keyes was
climbing into the passenger seat of the family car, which was parked
in the driveway beside the Keyes bungalow. Sarah's mother, Nancy, was
climbing behind the wheel. Suddenly, Nancy heard Sarah say, "Mommy,
there's something over here."
Nancy was sure that the "something" was benign and manageable -- a
bee, maybe, or a frog. No such luck. Lazing within a couple of feet
of Sarah's sandaled feet was a five-foot-long ...
