Bach: The Suites for Solo Cello (EMI A3V2 77815, two VHS tapes).
Is there a compelling reason to watch Mstislav Rostropovich play this
music in a video, rather than just listen to his audio recording (EMI
55363, two CDs)? Itzhak Perlman's video of Beethoven's Violin
Concerto is worth having beyond its high musical value, for the
ecstatic expressions on the soloist's face. But Rostropovich's
characteristic expression in this recording, which he clearly
considers the most important of his career, is one of intense
concentration -- tinged with a bit of worry.
Cellists will certainly want to watch his hands in action and
perhaps learn a thing or two. For the rest of us, there is the
atmosphere ...
