Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts is no longer
offering health insurance through chambers of commerce and other
small-business groups, igniting accusations the insurer is
abandoning small firms.
Blue Cross insisted yesterday that it was committed to the
small-business market, even though insuring them has been
unprofitable. The state's biggest health insurer said it would no
longer require small businesses to purchase their health coverage
through large umbrella groups and would sell to them directly.
The decision, effective April 1, has dismayed leaders of small
businesses and chambers of commerce in Massachusetts, with one
