NEW YORK -- Another poignant scene from the inevitable "El Duque"
Hernandez TV movie was staged here last night: The Cuban defector
doffed his cap for the American national anthem, then puzzled the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a Luis Tiant-like range of deceptive
deliveries in his major league debut.
Orlando Hernandez's life has been playing out in improbable acts
ever since he and seven others slammed into the Bahamas in a 20-foot
boat over Christmas. Last night he replaced David Cone, who missed a
turn because a Jack Russell terrier named Veronica bit him on his
pitching hand Tuesday.
With Cuban flags fluttering from the Yankee Stadium upper deck
and fans chanting, "El Duque" and ...
