When Scott Whitcomb left his job as assistant professional at the
Kittansett Club last year and took a position with the Massachusetts
Golf Association, the Duxbury native thought those 80-hour work weeks
were behind him.
"They are," Whitcomb said with a laugh. "It seems like I'm
working 90 hours a week now."
He oversees the handicap system for more than 88,000 golfers who
carry United States Golf Association handicaps in Massachusetts. If
there is a problem, he takes the phone call. "When I come in on
Monday mornings, there seems to me 20 to 30 messages regarding
handicaps on my voice mail," said Whitcomb.
Handicaps are as much a part of golf as a sliced drive or a
