They're from Australia, Ukraine, and the United States. Their
ages range from 20 to 32, their appearance from barely-there-wisp to
statuesque. What the five ballerinas cast in the lead in Boston
Ballet's "Swan Lake" do share, at the moment, is stress. "Swan
Lake," which the company performs at the Wang Center Thursday through
May 17, is the ballet that, for much of the public, means ballet.
And the company launches into this landmark after a rehearsal period
so short it's scary.
In larger cities like New York, ballet company ads play up the
leading dancers in a particular work. Boston Ballet has tended to
