Olympia Dukakis has played plenty of mothers in her 40 years of
acting, from her Oscar-winning performance as the matriarch in
"Moonstruck" to Amanda Wingfield in "The Glass Menagerie." She
raised three children of her own and nursed her mother when she was
confined to a home for senior citizens. So motherhood is familiar
territory. But at 66, the actress never expected to be appearing as
parent to the likes of Regan, Goneril, and Cordelia, the trio of
sisters in Shakespeare's tragedy "King Lear."
"No, no, no," she says, "I'm not someone who has been running
around all of my life saying I wanted to play this role." But
