Three weeks ago today at St. Andrews, Ernie Els was mostly annoyed
with himself. He had three-putted three of the last four greens and
still managed a 68 in the second round of the British Open, trailing
by only a shot. But he also knew in his heart he had squandered a
glorious chance to separate himself from the field that day before he
faded on the weekend.
Els insisted today that any lingering negative thoughts from that
experience have been purged from his memory bank. But today in the
second round of the PGA Championship at Riviera Country Club, the 25-
year-old South African many consider the best young player in the
world made certain it would not happen again.
