It may be time to start writing the obituary for the American living room.

Just look at the Columbia living room of Terry Streib and Lisa Maddox. You won't find any fancy sofas there, only an eight-foot- long pool table.

In Elizabeth and Fritz Scheuren's remodeled bungalow in Alexandria, the living room has been turned into an elegant dining room that can easily seat 10 guests.

The living room wasn't even included in the blueprints for the three-year-old, five-bedroom home of Steven Weinstein, a builder based in Ellicott City. "I just didn't feel it was necessary," Weinstein said.
