Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts yesterday proposed to
raise 1999 premiums for its Medex Gold supplemental insurance for
seniors by 9.9 percent to $283.97 a month.
Unlike past Medex increases, which met with sharp opposition from
senior advocates, the proposal was greeted yesterday with relatively
mild disapproval.
"We're sorry to see the rate increases, but we are glad that Medex
remains a viable option for seniors who can afford it," said Geoff
Wilkinson, executive director of the Massachusetts Senior Action
Council, an advocate group.
Medex Gold, like other so-called medigap supplemental insurance,
helps pay medical bills not covered by Medicare, the federal health
