"On New Year's, success doesn't depend so much on making people
laugh," said Dick Doherty, who has performed every New Year's Eve for
36 years. "It depends on your ability to let people have a good
time. And those are two different things."
For year No. 37, Doherty plays a double-header. He's at the
Comedy Escape at the Chase House in Salem at 7 p.m., then travels
about 35 miles to his club at the Holiday Inn in Randolph, where
he'll meet up with Dwayne Perkins for a 10:15 show.
"It's more energy and higher expectations on New Year's," said
Perkins, who's performed for the past three years on Dec. 31.
"There's so much hype about it that there's a chance people will be
