Article: New Year's energy brings smiles to comics' faces

"On New Year's, success doesn't depend so much on making people laugh," said Dick Doherty, who has performed every New Year's Eve for 36 years. "It depends on your ability to let people have a good time. And those are two different things."

For year No. 37, Doherty plays a double-header. He's at the Comedy Escape at the Chase House in Salem at 7 p.m., then travels about 35 miles to his club at the Holiday Inn in Randolph, where he'll meet up with Dwayne Perkins for a 10:15 show.
