TOKYO -- Nomar Garciaparra is a front-runner in the race for Most
Valuable Player in the American League.
But the Red Sox shortstop would gladly pass up any postseason
award in favor of news that the team had found a way to re-sign Mo
Vaughn.
"We need him," said Garciaparra, the 1997 AL Rookie of the Year
and a key part of the franchise who might become the franchise if
Vaughn doesn't bite on the offer the Red Sox made yesterday.
"It takes a special person to play in Boston, and not just anybody
can fill that role. You can't get rid of him. You can't lose a guy
like that without it affecting the whole team. There is a lot of
stuff you have to deal with playing in that city and that club." ...
