Article: Previn's signature The composer looks back on his piano concerto

Andre Previn always knew he was going to be some kind of musician, but what kind of musician remained unclear for a very long time -- even after he achieved celebrity in such diverse fields as film music, jazz piano, and orchestral conducting.

Previn is now 69, and his ultimate reputation may rest on the most lasting musical achievement, composition. He has composed for most of his life, but the piece that established him as a composer, a music- theater collaboration with playwright Tom Stoppard, "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor," wasn't written until 1977. Only this year did Previn produce his first opera, "A Streetcar Named Desire," which was premiered in San Francisco in September.
