A group of GOP lawmakers yesterday dismissed the large body of
research showing that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a major cause of
the thinning of the Earth's ozone layer and called for the United
States to delay or repeal the phaseout of the chemicals.
"I am convinced . . . that there has not been a sufficient showing
of scientific evidence to justify the current and rapidly approaching
ban date" for CFCs, Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.), an outspoken
critic of the phaseout, told a House hearing on the issue yesterday.
Under a 1992 law, U.S. manufacturers must halt production of CFCs by
the end of this year.
