NEW YORK -- Oscar De La Hoya wasn't within 2,500 miles of New
York, but his long shadow hung over Pernell Whitaker and Felix
Trinidad all week.
Whitaker and Trinidad were in the final days of preparation for
the biggest fight of their careers, last night's International Boxing
Federation welterweight title clash at Madison Square Garden, but so
much of the talk was about the winner fighting De La Hoya that
Whitaker finally remarked, "What's wrong with you guys? This ain't
about Oscar De La Hoya. This is a big fight, not some tuneup. This
is for the title."
Indeed it was, and a case could be made that the holder of that
title when the first bell rang, Trinidad, was every bit as dangerous
