THE TITLE and cover photograph of Tripping Daisy's "i am an
ELECTRIC FIRECRACKER" suggest that this is the artiest band ever to
come out of Dallas. The music, however, is not that arch; such songs
as "Bang" and "Piranha" are tuneful post-hardcore rock with a
psychedelic twist. Things get stranger toward the end of the disc,
which was co-produced by longtime D.C. rock-scene stalwart Ted
Niceley, but tracks like "Motivation" are practically Beatlesque.
Singer/guitarist Tim DeLaughter's cryptic lyrics aren't as
evocative as he probably wishes, and there are too many similar
acoustic-guitar ballads psychedelicized with faint but shrill
electric noise. Maybe the quartet is just trying too hard ...
