Maud Morgan, the Boston artist beloved both for her paintings and
for the courageous and adventurous way she led her life, died
yesterday at the Youville Hospital & Rehabilitation Center in
Cambrdige from complications resulting from pneumonia. She was 96.
In a career spanning most of the 20th century, Ms. Morgan became
an icon. She started showing in New York in the heady heyday of
Abstract Expressionism, alongside the big boys: Jackson Pollock, Mark
Rothko, Barnett Newman. She gave up New York for Boston and, while
teaching in Andover, became a mentor to art students including Frank
Stella and Carl Andre, who would go on to become far more famous than
