Stanley Kubrick, the last of the great cinema artists of the 20th
century, died yesterday at age 70 in his home outside London. No
cause of death was given by his family.
Moving from one genre to the next in a 45-year career -- jabbing
and weaving from the epic story of "Spartacus" (1960) to the intimate
adaptation of "Lolita" two years later -- the Bronx-born filmmaker
mixed form and function with unmatched wizardry.
Jack Nicholson, a longtime friend who delivered one of his finest
performances as the deranged writer-husband-father in Mr. Kubrick's
"The Shining," was devastated.
